What can I expect at the consultation?

The main goal of the free consultation is to get to know each other and see if we’re a good fit.  We care about you getting the best support possible, even if it isn’t from us.

At your free consultation, we will meet on the same online platform that we will have our sessions on.  This allows us to make sure that the program works well on your device and that you are comfortable with it.  We’ll also talk for a few minutes about what you can expect during your work with 1000 Hills.

Your therapist will ask some general questions about your situation and your goals for therapy as well as your mental health background.  You will not be asked to describe any trauma or go into difficult details during this appointment.  We’ll make sure to save time for any questions you have.

What can I expect at the first therapy session?

Your first individual session is an assessment.  We treat each client like an individual and tailor treatment for them.  Taking the time to understand your situation allows us to serve you in the best way we can.

Your therapist will spend a few minutes discussing confidentiality and therapy.  Then, she will want to learn about you and the issue that you want to focus on in therapy. She’ll ask more questions about your symptoms and give you space to share your story.

What can we expect in couples counseling?

Le practices emotion focused therapy, which is one of the most effective approaches to helping couples make lasting change.  It may look different than other therapies you have experienced or that you’ve seen in the media.

Your first session, you will both meet with the therapist for about an hour and  a half.  You will be asked about your relationship: how it started, where you are now, the great and the discouraging parts. We’ll also spend a bit of time talking about the places where you tend to get stuck.

After that first session, each partner will schedule a 45 minute attachment interview.  That is an individual session where we learn about your life and the things that impact you in the relationship.  After each partner completes that, we come back together as a group.  We will have laid the foundation through those early meetings to make lasting change in the relationship and help you stay connected for the long haul.

After your initial sessions, couples typically meet weekly for 45 minute sessions. Most couples experience significant changes in their relationships within 8 – 20 sessions but your experience will be different based on your situation and goals.

Does online therapy work?

Online therapy isn’t right for every person or every situation.  However, research shows that, for many people, online therapy is just as effective as traditional therapy.

Is online therapy right for me?

There are a few important things to consider when you are deciding to pursue online counseling.

  • Internet Speed:
    • It is important that you have a strong internet connection to be able to participate in online therapy.  As a rule, if you are able to stream Netflix, you should be able to use our online platform.
  • Privacy:
    • In a traditional therapist’s office, the walls protect you from others hearing your story.  With online therapy, it is your responsibility to find a private place that you can talk without distractions and without others over hearing.  Keep in mind that some employers have access to staff computers so if you attend sessions on your work phone or computer they may be able to access your private information.

Is this confidential?

We want you to feel safe with 1000 Hills.  You can trust that what you say to us, stays with us.  We use HIPPA compliant software and video platforms so your information is as secure as possible.

There are a few exceptions to confidentiality.  If we believe that you are a danger to yourself or others or if we have reason to suspect child abuse, we are legally obligated to report that to the proper authorities.  You can find out more about the limits to confidentiality in your consent paperwork and you are always invited to ask your therapist about any concerns.

How are therapy groups different than Facebook groups?

For many parents of kids with special needs, Facebook groups are a lifeline.  You are able to meet parents on the same journey and get advice about everything from medication, to treatments, to coping strategies.  They are invaluable.

A therapy group serves a different purpose.  Instead of focusing on how to best parent your child, we will focus exclusively on your experience and your challenge.  Participants will be invited to share their emotional struggles and successes.  There is no pressure in our groups to find a silver lining or be positive about what you are facing.  You’ll find support no matter where you in the grief process.
